The Measurement of Urban Travel Demand

چکیده

It is a truism that the transportation system is a critical component of every urban economy, and that transportation policy decisions can have a profound effect on the development of the urban system. Public transportation projects are often massive and mutually exclusive, with irreversible cumulative effects over long periods. If major social losses are to be avoided, careful planning based on a conceptually sound and empirically accurate benefit-cost calculus is essential. Accurate forecasts of travel demand under alternative transport policies are required for precise calculations of benefits. To be fully satisfactory, these forecasts must be sufficiently sensitive to reflect the impact of the changing urban environment over the lifetime of proposed transport projects. Travel demand forecasting has long been the province of transportation engineers, who have built up over the years considerable empirical wisdom and a repertory of largely ad hoc models which have proved successful in various applications. The contribution of psychologists and economists to forecasting methodology has been limited; despite a surge of recent interest, there still does not exist a solid foundation in behavioral theory for demand forecasting

Literature Review of Traffic Assignment: Static and Dynamic

Rapid urban growth is resulting into increase in travel demand and private vehicle ownership in urban areas. In the present scenario the existing infrastructure has failed to match the demand that leads to traffic congestion, vehicular pollution and accidents. With traffic congestion augmentation on the road, delay of commuters has increased and reliability of road network has decreased. Four s...

Demand-oriented timetable design for urban rail transit under stochastic demand

In the context of public transportation system, improving the service quality and robustness through minimizing the average passengers waiting time is a real challenge. This study provides robust stochastic programming models for train timetabling problem in urban rail transit systems. The objective is minimization of the weighted summation of the expected cost of passenger waiting time, its va...

A Novel Method for Travel System Patterns

Due to population growth in urban areas, especially in the capital cities in developing countries, the use of private vehicles are increasing, leading to many problems such as congestion, pollution, noise, long travel time, high travel cost and more side effects. In such circumstances government policy would encourage people to use public transportation. In the meantime, employing the Intellige...

Creating Bus Timetables Under Stochastic Demand

Local bus network is the most popular transit mode and the only available transit mode in the majority of cities of the world. Increasing the utility of this mode which increases its share from urban trips is an important goal for city planners. Timetable setting as the second component of bus network design problem (network route design timetable setting vehicle assignment crew assignment) hav...

A Study of Factors Influencing Demand For Travel to Iran

In this paper the factors having influence on travel demand to Iran are paper explored. The hypothesis of the research specifies the variable of “domestic upheavals and insecurity” as the most significant obstacle to expansion of the demand for travel to Iran. To test the above hypothesis, first several demand models that have been proposed to study demand for tourism in different countries, ar...
